Title: ASL Mentor

About the role
ASL Spring is looking for an ASL Mentor to work one-on-one with our students as they build real fluency in American Sign Language. This is the role where progress actually happens. You'll get to know your students, notice what's holding them back, and help them work through it.
Beyond vocabulary and grammar, you'll help students understand Deaf culture and feel connected to the Deaf community. For a lot of learners, a mentor is their first sustained relationship with a fluent signer, and that matters as much as anything on the curriculum.
What you'll do
Meet with students regularly to review their progress and give clear, useful feedback
Help students build ASL vocabulary, grammar, and syntax
Strengthen both receptive and expressive skills, so students can follow a conversation as well as hold one
Guide students through conversation practice and storytelling
Find ways to keep students engaged and motivated, especially when they hit a plateau
Work with other mentors and instructors to make sure the program is serving students well
Attend training sessions and workshops to keep your teaching approach current
Take part in program assessment and evaluation as needed
What we're looking for
A bachelor's degree in ASL, education, or a related field
Fluency in American Sign Language and written English
Strong command of ASL vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, along with knowledge of Deaf community and culture
Experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring students
Strong communication, lesson planning, and interpersonal skills
Comfort working independently and as part of a team
Solid organizational and time management skills
A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Nice to have
Advanced ASLPI or SLPI results, or comparable credentials demonstrating ASL proficiency
Experience with online or one-on-one instruction
Deaf and hard of hearing applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Compensation
This is a part-time contract position paying $30–$40 per hour, based on experience.
