Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really learn ASL online?
Yes. ASL Spring combines self-paced video lessons taught fully in ASL by Deaf instructors with live practice groups on Zoom, where you sign in real time with Deaf facilitators and other students. Mentoring plans add one-on-one sessions with a Deaf mentor for personal feedback.
I'm a complete beginner. Which plan should I choose?
Start with ASL Lessons. It includes the full curriculum from the very first signs, plus weekly practice groups. If you want personal feedback as you go, choose ASL Mentoring. ASL Practice is best for people who already know some ASL and mainly want conversation practice.
What's included in each plan?
- ASL Practice: 12+ hours of live Deaf-led practice groups each month and the student Discord
- ASL Lessons: the complete curriculum, weekly practice groups and Discord
- ASL Mentoring: everything in ASL Lessons, plus 30 minutes of one-on-one mentoring each month
- ASL Mentoring+: everything in ASL Lessons, plus two hours of one-on-one mentoring each month
How long does it take to finish the course?
The curriculum is designed to take about six months. It's self-paced, so you can go faster or slower and pick up where you left off at any time.
Should I pay monthly or yearly?
Yearly plans cost less over time: you save about 8% on ASL Practice, 11% on ASL Lessons, 17% on ASL Mentoring and 12% on Mentoring+. Monthly plans are more flexible and let you move up or down a tier at the end of any month.
What can I use the Certificate of Completion for?
After you finish the curriculum and our faculty verify your work, you receive a Certificate of Completion you can share with schools, employers and organizations to show your ASL education. ASL Spring does not grant college credit.
What do I need to get started?
An internet connection and an email address for your account. For live practice groups on Zoom, a computer or tablet works best so you can see everyone's signing clearly.
What if it's not the right fit?
You can cancel anytime from your student portal, and you can request a full refund for any payment made in the last 14 days. See our Terms of Service for details.
Can I give ASL classes as a gift?
Yes. Gift certificates are available for ASL Practice, ASL Lessons, ASL Mentoring and as a general gift card.
Do you offer plans for teams or schools?
Yes. We offer Deaf-led ASL and Deaf culture training for businesses, schools and organizations, online or on-site. See ASL training for businesses and teams.
