About
ASL Spring is an online American Sign Language program where every lesson, practice group and mentoring session is led by Deaf instructors. Since 2020, we’ve helped more than 3,000 students around the world learn ASL and build a respectful, lasting connection with the Deaf community.
Our story
ASL Spring was founded in 2020 by Jon Urquhart, a heritage signer and Child of Deaf Adults (CODA) who grew up with a DeafBlind parent. It began as Drunkhands ASL, a small online community of people eager to learn sign language from the people who use it every day.
As the community grew, so did our mission. In 2023 we became ASL Spring. In ASL, the sign for SPRING is the same as the sign for GROW, and growth is what we’re here for: growing your signing skills, your understanding of Deaf culture, and your connection to the Deaf community. Since then we’ve rebuilt our curriculum, added flexible one-on-one mentoring, and expanded our live practice groups to more than 12 hours every month.

We believe the best ASL teachers are members of the Deaf community. Our mentors and facilitators are Deaf professionals, many trained at Gallaudet University, who bring native fluency and lived experience to every session. Our lessons are taught fully in ASL, never voiced, so you learn through immersion and gain an authentic view of Deaf culture alongside the language.
