Deaf Awareness Month Watchlist

September is Deaf Awareness Month! It’s the perfect time to celebrate Deaf culture and learn through film and television. To make it easy, we’ve organized this watchlist by streaming service and included exactly where you can rent or purchase titles that aren’t on subscriptions.

Apple TV+ (Subscription)

  • CODA (2021) – Oscar-winning drama about a Child of Deaf Adults.

  • Deaf President Now! (2025) – Documentary on the 1988 Gallaudet University protests.

Netflix (Subscription)

  • Deaf U (2020) – Reality docuseries about Gallaudet University students.

  • Audible (2021) – Short doc following a Deaf high school football player.

  • The Walking Dead (2021) (Season 11 Episode 6) - On The Inside features the perspective of Deaf actress Lauren Ridloff who is trapped in a house of feral humans.

  • Black Rabbit (2025) - Premiers September 18th on Netflix and features Troy Kotsur

Hulu / Disney+ (with subscription)

  • Only Murders in the Building (Hulu, Season 1 & 3) – Includes a standout near-silent episode featuring Deaf actor James Caverly.

  • Eternals (2021) - Features actress Lauren Ridloff as the first Deaf superhero in the MCU

HBO MAX

  • The Last of Us (2023, HBO) – Features Deaf actor Keivonn Woodard in a celebrated episode.

    Titles Featuring ASL Interpretation on MAX:

    • The Last of Us (Seasons 1 & 2)
      Max offers the entire series with ASL interpretation, featuring real-time signing by Daniel Durant and Leila Hanaumi. Season 1 became available in ASL starting March 31, 2025, and Season 2 debuted with ASL versions on April 13, 2025, synchronized with the main premiere—marking a first for HBO programming on the platform.

    • Barbie (with ASL)
      The ASL-interpreted version of Barbie features Leila Hanaumi signing alongside key film scenes, available now on Max.

    • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (with ASL)
      This blockbuster film is available on Max with ASL interpretation by Otis Jones.

    • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (with ASL)
      The beloved classic Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is streaming exclusively on Max with an ASL-interpreted track.

    • A Minecraft Movie (with ASL)
      This family-friendly film includes a version with ASL interpretation, now available on Max.

    • Sinners (with Black American Sign Language)

      Full movie with Black American Sign Language interpretation by Nakia Smith
